Harlan Howard, who was often called the “Irving Berlin of country music,” wrote #1 country hits in five consecutive decades, from the 1950s to the 1990s. This song went to #11 on the Billboard country charts with Mel Tillis in 1967 and then to #1 with Ricky Van Shelton in 1988. From the attention-getting opener, “If she seems cold and bitter I beg of you / Just stop and consider all she’s gone through,” to the payoff in the hook, “So don’t blame her, life turned her that way,” this is classic country at its best.
